I have a been making some very pretty Bridal Hair Flowers this weekend.

I start with a trip to the Fabric store for some gorgeous quality Bridal Satin and Tulle.

I draft all my own patterns for my flowers and every petal is hand cut and shaped by me. Each flower has at least 10 layers so they have a lovely fullness to them. They are lots of work, but also very satisfying to make.

The great thing about my hair flowers, is that not only do I make the actual flowers myself, I also handcraft the jewel centerpieces! Like all my jewelery, they start with vintage and vintage tooled brass componentry, which I shape and solder, have plated and then hand set all the petals and stones.

The best thing about my pieces is their originality. There's nothing thats store bought on them, nothing pre-made, mass made or hashed into something new. Perfect for Brides wanting quality couture pieces. I can also make all the matching jewelry. What could be better?

One little catch........ I will not be taking custom orders on my hair flowers. Each is original and is sold as OOAK. My workspace is too small to allow me to have flower making set up full time!

My Process......

I have been enjoying making Bridal hair accessories and jewelery for over 13 years now. Over the time I have had both retail stores, local and international wholsale clients. At times up to 13 staff.
My various past businesses have enjoyed showings in Australia, the UK and the USA (where my pieces showed with Maggie Sottero).
My currently business, Lulu Splendor, is a wholly solo show! I create everything personally from my home in Melbourne, Australia. I have no studio, and spread my work all over my home (requires lots of patience from my husband and 3 children.... thanks!) I solder in the laundry, and do all the other metal work in the backyard shed. All the stone setting, beading, packing of orders and administration in my small dining area. Luckily my items are small.

Most of my componentry comes from the USA, with a selection coming from Italy and Germany. The base metal of all these are Brass. I choose specific pieces for their beauty and quality, and also because it really appeals to me that they are vintage tooled. Vintage tooled means that the dies that they use to cut and dap the metal pieces are original and as old as 1890, but the metal and process of stamping the pieces is new. Because I have been making as long as I have, I also have components that are genuinely vintage, and continually scour for more.
I have hundreds of different components..... here is a sample (and a messy workspace)

I use my componets to make gorgeous pieces! I dont always accept the pieces as they are, and cut, solder, drill and dap them to suit my design and purpose.
When I solder, I usually make multiples, particularity on popular designs, like the Sabine comb.

After soldering, I send every piece away to be plated. I use a local plater, who does a brilliant job for me. I have been using them for many years, and particularly appreciate that they have a state of the art system, and have won environmental awards.
This Link will take you to my metal colour samples.
If the metal finish is to be 'Vintage Brass' or 'Vintage Silver' I oxidize and hand finish the surface colour myself, by hand.
After plating, they are all ready to set stones and pearls. I do this completely by hand..... every tiny stone. I only use Swarovski Pearls and Rhinestone. Nothing else matches it for quality, consistency and variety...... and its sparkles beautifully.
I stock a large Swarovski range, but not the whole range. I often custom make many of my items in other colors. I always stock pearl in White and Cream (Swarovski Cream is actaully standard ivory colour). I do have other colours too. I would love to stock more pieces finished in colour in my Etsy store, but currently dont have the time to produce them except by custom order.

I also have some Genuine vintage stones and beads and one day, when time allows, will make a range to specially showcase them.

My Etsy store stocks a wide range of pieces I have handmade myself. They are all ready to ship. I also frequently do custom work, and work with each bride individually to design and create new pieces.
Some brides want and out of stock item, some want a colour change, or a small design change, others are looking for a whole new piece to be designed for them. I try to accommodate all requests, provided of course time is allowed for the full process.

I am able to offer my pieces in a choice of colours, here are some colour samples for your reference.

Silver Colours

Shiny Silver.

This one is sealed, it wont ever tarnish. A gorgeous glossy light silver colour.

Rhodium.

A luxury finish. A darker silver that's great if you are looking for a traditional vintage colour. This colour is also known as white gold.

Vintage Silver.

Wonderfully antiqued, all done by hand. I have this silver plated, and then oxide and polish back by hand. This colour may tarnish a bit over time. It is not sealed. Its easy to care for, keep it wrapped in the acid free tissue I supply to avoid tarnishing. A wipe with a polishing cloth every now and again will keep it looking great!

Gold Colours.

Shiny Gold

This Lovely Glossy is colour is in a fabulous warm shade.

Matt Gold

A beautiful shade, with a velvety finish

Vintage Brass

An Antiqued finish, hand finish for a unique patina. Great for vintage looks!

This finish is hand done and so subtle variations occur.

Verona Necklace

Showcasing this beautiful set in my Blog, as ita a private custom, and you wont see it in in my Etsy store.
This finish is Matt Silver Plate, and its a little high maintenance as its not sealed like my other silver finishes so it never tarnishes. Why? I find the lacquer process alters the silver color and makes it more pearlescent white, and it looses its soft silver-ness.
To care for this colour, keep it wrapped in the acid free tissue (provided with your jewelery) and in a snap lock bag inside my tin packages. Its the air that tarnishes it, so eliminating that will help. I have also heard that anti tarnish strips are fabulous. Popping them in the snap-lock bag with the silver works wonders.
I have seen them listed on Ebay USA and I am sure they are available in Jewelery supply stores... just not here in Australia!

I'm back for the new year, after enjoying a short break with my family. Its still summer school holidays here, and my kids are home until the start of February, so over the rest of the month, I'll just work around fitting in everything as best I can!

PEARLS! and thousands of really really tiny ones!
I have always used 100% Swarovski pearls, but the smallest they make them is 4mm.... small, but not small enough for some of my ideas, so I have managed to get my hands on some others that I am pleased with. I have them in White and Cream (Ivory) and I find the quality and colour match to be quite complimentry. It allows me to trim my pieces in a whole new way...

Areas I would like to expand on this year are Tiaras. I have made some really lovely tiaras as customs over the last year, but have never had them in the shop, and so intend to add a few small pretty ones.

I am so happy to share Toya's wedding pics! This one above with her Mum is my favorite.

Toya was the first to wear the fabulous Eliana Necklace , her version is in Powder Almond Pearl and Silk Rhinestones. I have actually made this piece a few times in various colour combination, and it always looks great.

She teamed it with custom matching studs, and then we had a last minute scramble to add on a feather fascinator. Toya will attest it was a bit of a rush for that last piece, but we made it and it looks great!

Very Important Christmas and New Year Production times for Lulu Splendor Customs.

We are fast heading toward the time of year when we in Australia take our summer vacation! During this time my platers close for 2-3 weeks which affects my production, as during this time I cannot get anything plated (all my work is beautifully plated). If you require a custom piece for your wedding in January/February please organise your order with me now, or at least by the end of November. March weddings should be organised by Christmas so that I can have all preparation work done for when the platers reopen in Mid January, for delivery during February.
I intend closing my shop over the Christmas / New Year period to have a break myself!
I am aiming to have my shop well stocked with favorites and one off pieces during the time when the platers are closed.

Tiff's Wedding

Heres the most lovely Tiff, who was married on the shore of Lake Superior (MN) , she had one of those fabulous fall days that are freaky gorgeous and summery, and what can I say, it all looks perfect!

Tiff was the first person to choose the colour combination in the cream pearl with the Golden Shadow (light Champagne). It's such a lovely combination, and now a firm favourite of mine. I know her set has already inspired a number of brides. Thank You Tiff!

Steph's Wedding

Here is another gorgeous destination wedding for to see. Steph's wedding! I think I have a soft spot for destination weddings, as I had one myself, although mine was quite unplanned and I wore flip flops......
Steph was married on the beach in Hawaii, and the wedding was all blue and white... even the guests clothing were blue and white (Steph, I need a pic of this to add in here....) Just gorgeous. Heres a couple of pics to enjoy

Cuff Bracelets

I have had a fair number of requests for solid thick cuff bracelets, so I thought I had better spend some time developing techniques and styles which will work with them. I have been playing about with them and have finished my first. This one is actually for me (a rarity!), so I have trimmed it in Swarovski white opal and White Alabaster, and a touch of clear, my favorite colors. This one is finished in Vintage Silver.

I hope to soon have some in my shop

Linda's Kauai Wedding

Here is the lovely Linda in Hawaii..... Lucky girl! ( I would LOVE to go there myself.....)

I made her an entire set of jewelery and accessories, all based around the brooch that came with her dress. We customised the necklace, as she wanted it to reflect the sweetheart neckline of her dress. I think the result is perfect! At the almost last minute, she added on a Stella Hair Accessory, which is a wonderful finishing touch. All the pearls are ivory, and the finish, in Silver. Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Linda.

Catherine's Wedding

Sometimes I just create a piece because I am inspired by the shape and form. When I used to have the 'Big Business" I always felt that the creative process was stifled because it wasn't just about making a beautiful piece of jewellery, the focus became upon how that one piece fit into a set for the retailers.

Luckily for me, now I am a wholly solo show, I can really make whatever I like. This is how this gorgeous little fascinator came into being. Its not part is a set, it just sits on its own so that the wearer can place it uniquely and make it theirs.

And so we come to Catherine, who has sent me these beautiful photos to make my heart a-flutter!

I think it really embodies what I am trying to achieve here: elegant simplicity.

I made a most fabulous necklace for her (and earrings too, but really in this case it's all about the necklace) I loved it when I made it and love it more now....... and it will soon be in my Etsy Shop, as I have to have another.

Amberie's Wedding

Take a little peak at Amberie's wedding photos, so fun and romantic! A most beautiful day, as we have not seen for a while here in rainy Melbourne (no complaints, we are in drought so its most welcome) . I made Amberie a dress attachment, earrings and a tiny bracelet for her wrist. The finish on these was matt silver, and I was really pleased with the results. The dress attachment was made in three pieces, that were sewn on to make it look like a single piece. I designed it that way for practically and comfort.

Veils and Veil Clips

I have just finished making this veil and veil clip set for Kristen, whose wedding is coming up very shortly.

I had not made veil before, and it wasn't through lack of will, it was a time thing, but I was really pleased to have the opportunity to make one.

The biggest obstacle for me was not the actual construction but the detail in the finish. It's my terribly precise nature to make sure that everything looks finished and fabulous and it always bothered me about what went on the other side of the veil, you know that side that you dont see in the pictures? The current fashion is for an asymmetrical fascinator or brooch for one side of the veil, but what happens on the other side? I know the slide is tucked into the hair, but what of the bar? Is it just placed there unfinished and ugly?

My solution was to cover and decorate the slide part with a co-ordinating vintage filigree and trim it with a little rhinestone. Very minimal and very delicate, but defiantly 'finished'

And here clipped over the top.

The veil is actually put in the hair and whilst it on, you clip the brooch over the top. The alligator clip on the back is really strong, so it holds well. This way, later the veil can be removed and the clip can go back in the hair, and better still, you can continue to wear the clip after the wedding too. An, added bonus!

New Rhodium Fascinators

I have made some pretty new fascinators for my store. As usual, they are highly detailed and complex in construction. I just cant leave well enough alone and keep it simple when it comes to these beauties! I just love to layer and layer and keep them soft and textured and interesting.

My fascinators are special because I design all my own clip decorations for the front, so they are totally unique and only available from me.

They are all really well constructed.... Not a glue gun in sight!

These are heirloom quality and will last for years!

They are in my Etsy store Lulu Splendor right now.

This little lovely is an add on I wanted to show off, for me, it's a bit of love at first sight!

I have made this for Stephanie, my lovely customer who I have made all sorts of pieces for. This will be for a costume she is planning for Halloween (is that right Steph?)

I suspect though, she might wear it again

Custom Sketches

I do a lot of custom work, and these pictures illustrate the 'sketch' I show my customers when designing the pieces, and also the finished product.

Most things start out as a raw brass vintage component. They are then soldered, drilled shaped, hammered, trimmed or whatever they need doing to manipulate them into what I need them to be. The pieces are then fully assembled and sent away to be plated as a whole piece, including the beads! I like to do it this way because the finish is beautiful, and the surface perfect. I never use pre assembled pieces or pre-plated pieces and simply assemble together. After the pieces are back from the platers, I set every pearl and rhinestone by hand. Its very intricate work!

This is why I need lots of lead time for my pieces, and I am unable to accommodate rush orders.

Crystelle's Wedding

This is the most charming Crystelle and her sister. This time my little business brings a little piece of Paris to share! Crystelle had a sophisticated 1950s theme, and I made her a selection of clips for her veil and gorgeous little filigree drop earrings. Her sister wore a brooch at her waist and a fabulous pair of purple Swarovski floral earrings.

Deb's Wedding

You'd have to agree that Corrie looks completely stunning! She has a beautiful strapless gown and a divine bolero from fellow Etsy seller Bonzie , and of course her Lulu Splendor collection! Enjoy these pics and thanks Corrie for sharing.

Here is what I designed for her. The inspiration for this set was her bolero. We used rhodium plate to match into the grey pearls on the jacket, cream pearls to tone in with the dress and of course, rhinestone for glamourous sparkle. I made a collection of hairpins for her hair to scatter through and enhance the style, a very pretty triple stranded bracelet, and an asymmetrical necklace with a floral rose feature. Corrie's solution to keeping the necklace firmly in the perfect place without worry on the day was a dab of nipple glue (LOL!) on the back. She said it worked perfectly and didn't give it another thought for the whole day! I love a practical solution.

I have recently finished these stunning multi-strand bracelets for custom orders. They really show off my favoured style of delicate and intricate layering of componentry and jewels. I dont do a lot of them as they are so tricky to make, so they dont appear too often in my store, but these are just stunning. I'll be sad when they leave!
